NoScript is an addon for Firefox that mainly blocks all javascript that is not in your list of safe sites. Javascript and embeded objects like flash, pdf, videos and Java applets are the main cause of computer infections. You can be visiting a website that will execute code in the background (using these plugins and javascript) and have your computer download and install malware without you knowing it. These so called �drive-by downloads� and other annoyances like popups (even though Firefox has a built in popup blocker, there are ways around it) can be prevented using NoScript.
NoScipt works by blocking ALL javascript and plugins on every site that you did not allow. If you visit a site that requires javascript and you trust that site, you can add that site by clicking on the �allow (websiteyouallow.com)'.
Many sites use multiple javascripts from multiple sources, for example to add facebook �like� buttons, embeded youtube video�s, Google tracking, etc�NoScipt lets you allow every domain rather than all scripts from various domains at once, as this is a lot safer. Once you add YouTube as �allow�, it will not ask you again about YouTube scripts as you have allowed these permanently.
If you visit an unknown website and it does not seem to load or the video does not seem to play, but you are unsure what domain is safe to allow, then you can click on �temporary allow�� to see if that makes the website work. Then next time you know what to allow permanently.
When you start using NoScipt, you will get lots of questions at first if you wish to allow scripts from this domain. However, the more you use it, the less it will ask. If you use NoScript on multiple computers, you can synchronize your whitelist and blacklist using a Firefox plugin called XMarks. What you taught NoScript on one computer, it will also know on the other. To do this go to NoScript options and enable �Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark for easy synchronization� after or before installing XMarks.
